Congratulations Jamshaid Ashiq!
Huge congratulations to our colleague, Muhammad Jamshaid Ashiq, on the publication of his latest research in Water, Air, & Soil Pollution!
At Emmace Consulting, we pride ourselves on having world-class experts on our team. While Jamshaid is now a key part of our lab—focusing his expertise on VOS (Volatile Organic Substances) analysis — his previous work provides groundbreaking insights into drinking water safety and disinfection by-products (DBPs).
Some takeaways from his study on Adsorbable Organic Halogens (AOX) in Swedish water treatment:
Overview
- The study examined the formation of adsorbable organic halogens (AOX), a comprehensive indicator of disinfection by-products, in four full-scale drinking water treatment plants in Sweden.
Key Findings
- Chemical disinfection was the dominant source of AOX, with chlorination and chloramination producing similar AOX levels when measured without quenching.
- Coagulation effectively removed AOX already present in raw water,
- UV treatment caused small increases in AOX.
Implications for Drinking Water Safety
- AOX levels generally decreased during distribution, indicating transformation of disinfection by-products over time.
- The results highlight that ΔAOX (AOX formed during disinfection) is a more relevant metric for assessing DBPs and potential health risks than regulated DBPs alone
We are incredibly proud of Jamshaid’s contribution to environmental science and are thrilled to have his analytical skills supporting our clients here at Emmace!
